The Wye Research and Education Center’s research and extension programs, located on the shores of the Wye River, focus on preserving the health of the Chesapeake Bay, sustaining agriculture productivity, product diversity and maintaining Maryland’s valued quality of life.

The 1994 AIA Maryland and Baltimore juries commended the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Laboratory for its contextual, barn-like design, which rejected a clinical aesthetic in favor of the Maryland Eastern Shore's rural heritage. The project was further lauded for its seamless integration into the historic Wye Research and Education Center site.
