Challenge
A tight urban site in a formerly industrialized, underutilized pocket of downtown Baltimore. An 84-bed assisted living program serving elders with behavioral health and addiction recovery needs requiring a residential, homelike scale not typically associated with dense city sites.

Outcome

Eight small-house households fit neatly, with two per floor, across four floors plus one common-area floor in this new 57,000 sf five-story building. Each household is a self-contained family-scaled unit of care rather than a wing off a central corridor. Corridors are minimized. Every household holds a screened porch adjacent to the activity room. The common areas include a Great Room, Multipurpose Room, a chapel, and two accessible outdoor gardens, plus dedicated PT, OT, Speech Therapy, and Hydrotherapy—bringing a residential model of care and genuine access to nature to a site that offered neither.
